The texture and composition of igneous rocks preserve the record of multiple and complex dynamics taking place within volcanic plumbing system in the time-space interval from magma storage to eruption. Recent advancements in the chemical and 2D/3D textural characterization of bulk rock, minerals and melt inclusions enable to quantify pre-eruptive dynamics such as magma ascent, mixing, crustal assimilation, interaction with crystalline mush and degassing, and their direct influence on the magma eruptibility and lava flows rheology. Parallelly, the refinement of thermobarometry and diffusion chronometry models allows a high-resolution reconstruction of the plumbing systems geometry and a better definition of the timescales of magma dynamics.
This session welcomes all contributions in petrology, experimental petrology, numerical and thermodynamic modelling, geochemistry and volcanology aiming at: i) improving our general knowledge of plumbing systems; ii) reconstructing the interactions of magma + mush systems; iii) identifying eruption precursors; iv) investigating syn-eruptive physico-chemical evolution of lavas and v) increasing our ability to forecast eruptive events.
