Frequently, explosive volcanic eruptions characterise the activity of open-conduit volcanoes. In populated areas, these explosions can be highly hazardous when occurring with little warning. Understanding why and how these explosions occur remains one of the major challenges in volcanology. In addition, we still lack a classification of explosive intensity to be used during the eruption that could be applicable to different volcanoes. Comprehending volcanic explosive activity demands a thorough understanding of the multitude of associated processes, including historical evidence gathered from eyewitness accounts. This session aims to foster contributions that delve into the critical aspects of the explosive eruptive style, including novel findings on magmatic source characterization, the application of advanced monitoring techniques for extracting new parameters, advancements in global knowledge, technological enhancements facilitating high observational quality, data integration, and modelling. Additionally, we seek contributions that offer more precise, multidisciplinary and easy to use tools for assessing hazards. We welcome integrated multidisciplinary contributions focusing on individual eruptive episodes, as well as those applying single techniques to diverse eruptive episodes and volcanoes, also aimed at early-warning systems development. Contributions of a multidisciplinary nature, exploring the impact of explosive activity on the environment and society, are also encouraged.
